Pre-OCI and Direct 1L Hiring: The New Normal

OCI used to be the gateway to BigLaw. You bid, you interviewed, you got callbacks, you got offers. That system still exists, but it is no longer the only game in town. An increasing number of firms are hiring through pre-OCI programs and direct applications, especially for 1L positions.

What is pre-OCI?

Pre-OCI refers to the hiring that happens before the formal OCI process begins. This can include:

  • Direct applications on firm websites that open months before OCI
  • 1L diversity fellowship programs with fall deadlines
  • Firm-hosted receptions and networking events that serve as informal first-round evaluations
  • Resume drops where firms collect applications outside the formal OCI system

Some firms have moved significant portions of their hiring to pre-OCI channels because it lets them lock up top candidates earlier.

Why firms do it

The traditional OCI timeline forces firms to compete for the same students in a compressed window. By hiring pre-OCI, firms can:

  • Identify and secure top talent before competitors
  • Build relationships with students earlier in law school
  • Diversify their candidate pool beyond the students who perform well in the OCI lottery

How to take advantage

Apply early. When firms open direct applications on their websites, apply immediately. Some firms review on a rolling basis, and early applicants have an advantage.

Attend firm events. Pre-OCI receptions, panels, and networking events are not just informational. Attorneys are evaluating you. Show up prepared, engaged, and professional.

Apply to 1L diversity fellowships. If you are eligible, these are some of the best early pathways into BigLaw. See our full guide to 1L diversity fellowships.

Build relationships with career services. Your career services office often has inside information about which firms are hiring pre-OCI and when. Stay in close contact with them.

Research firms in advance. By the time pre-OCI events start, you should already know which firms interest you and why. The firm directory helps you identify target firms and understand their practice areas and culture.

Is pre-OCI replacing OCI?

Not entirely. OCI is still the primary hiring channel for 2L positions at most firms. But pre-OCI is growing, and students who ignore it are missing out on opportunities. The best strategy is to engage with both: pursue pre-OCI opportunities aggressively while preparing for the formal process as well.

The recruiting market is shifting, and the students who adapt early have an advantage. Browse the firm directory to start building your target list now.
