How Flo Recruit Actually Works

If you are going through OCI, you are almost certainly going to use Flo Recruit. It is the platform most law schools and BigLaw firms use to manage the interview process. It is not complicated, but there are things you should know before you log in for the first time.

What Flo Recruit does

Flo Recruit is a recruiting platform that handles the entire OCI workflow:

  • Bid submission. You submit your ranked list of firms you want to interview with. The system matches you based on your preferences, firm preferences, and your school's allocation rules.
  • Interview scheduling. Once you are matched with firms, Flo Recruit assigns interview time slots. You can see your schedule, confirm slots, and manage conflicts.
  • Document management. You upload your resume, transcript, cover letters, and writing samples. Firms access these through the platform.
  • Callback coordination. After screeners, firms extend callback invitations through Flo Recruit. You accept and schedule through the platform.

The bidding process

This is the most important part. Most schools give you a limited number of bids (typically 20-40) to distribute across firms. You rank your preferences, and the system allocates interviews based on a combination of your preferences, firm preferences, and lottery elements.

Strategy matters here. Bidding all your slots on V10 firms when you are in the middle of your class is a waste. Spread your bids across reach firms, target firms, and safety firms. Our guide to OCI bidding strategy goes deeper on this.

Common mistakes

Not uploading documents on time. Flo Recruit has hard deadlines for resume and transcript uploads. Miss them and you are locked out of certain firms. Set calendar reminders.

Ignoring time slot conflicts. The platform will flag scheduling conflicts, but you need to resolve them quickly. If two interviews overlap, you must choose or request a reschedule. Do not assume it will sort itself out.

Using the wrong cover letter. If you upload firm-specific cover letters, double-check that the right letter is attached to the right firm. Sending a Sullivan & Cromwell cover letter to Davis Polk is an unforced error.

Not checking the platform regularly. Callback invitations, schedule changes, and messages come through Flo Recruit. Check it daily during OCI season.

Tips for using the platform

  • Test your login and document uploads well before deadlines
  • Download the mobile app so you can check your schedule on the go
  • Keep a spreadsheet tracking which firms you have bid on, interviewed with, and heard back from
  • Take screenshots of your interview schedule in case of technical issues

Flo Recruit is just a tool. The substance still matters more than the platform. Research your target firms on the firm directory and prepare for your interviews. The technology just gets you in the room.
